Got questions? We’ve got answers
What is Proscar 5mg?
Proscar is a prescription medicine containing 5mg finasteride. In the UK it is licensed for benign enlargement of the prostate (BPH). If prescribed for male-pattern hair loss, that use is off-label.
How should I take it?
Take Proscar exactly as instructed by your prescribing clinician. Do not change the dose or alter the tablet unless your prescriber tells you to do so. It may be taken with or without food.
Why might it be prescribed for hair loss?
Finasteride reduces DHT, a hormone involved in male-pattern hair loss. Proscar 5mg is not licensed for hair loss, so any use for this purpose is off-label and requires individual clinical assessment.
What side effects should I know about?
Finasteride has been associated with depression, suicidal thoughts and sexual side effects such as reduced sex drive and erectile dysfunction. Some sexual side effects have been reported to persist after treatment is stopped. Contact your doctor or prescriber promptly if you develop mood changes or sexual side effects.
Can women handle Proscar tablets?
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken finasteride tablets because finasteride can be absorbed through the skin and may affect a male fetus.
What should I read before taking it?
Read the Patient Information Leaflet and the finasteride patient alert card supplied with the medicine. Keep them for reference and discuss any questions with your prescriber or pharmacist.
