FINASTERIDE 1MG & 5MG: IMPORTANT TREATMENT INFORMATION
Finasteride 1mg & 5mg – 28 Tablets
1mg is the UK-licensed finasteride strength for male-pattern hair loss.
5mg finasteride is licensed for BPH; use for hair loss is off-label.
Finasteride reduces DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase.
The strength and dose supplied must be decided by the prescribing clinician.
Other Hair-Loss Treatments
Topical Minoxidil is applied directly to the scalp and does not reduce DHT.
Oral Minoxidil for hair loss is also an off-label prescription treatment in the UK.
Different treatments have different side effects, suitability criteria and monitoring requirements.
The most appropriate treatment depends on your health, medicines and hair-loss pattern.

Got questions? We’ve got answers
What strengths are available?
This product is available in 1mg and 5mg finasteride tablets. The prescriber will decide which strength and dose are appropriate for you.
Which strength is licensed for hair loss?
Finasteride 1mg is licensed in the UK for male-pattern hair loss. Finasteride 5mg is licensed for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), so using 5mg for hair loss is off-label.
Does 5mg work better than 1mg for hair loss?
The licensed hair-loss dose is 1mg once daily, and the product information states that increasing the dose has not been shown to increase efficacy. Do not choose a higher strength unless your prescriber has specifically directed it.
What side effects should I know about?
Finasteride is associated with sexual side effects, including reduced sex drive, erectile dysfunction and ejaculation disorders, and with psychiatric side effects including low mood, depression and suicidal thoughts. Some sexual side effects have been reported to persist after stopping treatment.
What should I do if my mood changes?
If you are taking finasteride 1mg and develop depression or suicidal thoughts, stop taking it and contact your doctor as soon as possible. If you are taking finasteride 5mg, contact your doctor as soon as possible for advice.
What should I read before taking Finasteride?
Read the Patient Information Leaflet and the finasteride patient alert card supplied with the medicine. Keep them for reference and contact your prescriber or pharmacist if you have questions.
